Being PR is a natural thing.

Things to consider when studying public relations:

1. Be a strong communicator and relationship builder
    • One of the most important duties as a public relations student is communication.
    • You need to ask yourself whether you are able to speak well in terms of expressing yourself both simply and elegantly.
    • Relationships are everything in public relations because as a public relations person, you have to build relationships with clients as well as the media at large. You need to be social in order to achieve this.
2.  Social Conscience

    • As a public relations student, you nee to be able to work with different personalities therefore, you need to volunteer in charity events and or homes.
    • You need to have taught lessons to all the disadvantaged pupils who have lost hope in life.
    • Money is not everything, volunteer out of the goodness of your heart.
3. Be able to multitask
    • Multitasking goes hand-in-hand with hard working. In order to be a good multitasking, you need to be a hard worker. person
    • One thing you should highly consider is the lack of sleep. In every hour, something is happening about your client and brand. At the very same time, you need to control a crisis report or pitch to the media.
    • This means you need to take your office everywhere you go in order to juggle everything and still be a step ahead of people.
4. Have a thick skin
    • Being in the public eye needs not someone with a faint heart.
    • Due to the different perceptions of people about the other, criticism will always be part of your meal therefore, you need to stand such.
    • Having a thick skin will help you recover from bad publicity and come back with a fire forced personality.
5. Passion is your key

    • Nothing in this world beats passion. Remember that public relations is not only about sitting in the office from 8am-5pm but, you will be going around organising events, socialising and receiving calls in the early hours of the morning from journalists just for a small pay. This should reflect your patience and passion for what you do.

  1. I couldn't agree with you more, being a PRP it a natural thing. But you can learn new skills to help you improve the skills that you already have. Also it helps to learn from the people who are highly experienced in the industry. That's how you develop especially as a young and an upcoming PRP.

    1. I agree with you Nomfundo to the fact that you also learn from others but, it should be in you or else you won"t make it. Have it in you then learn from others.

  2. Very compelling insights Mbali. And quite true, if you do not have what it takes to make it in this industry, you will fizzle away into space. This industry needs focused and driven individuals.
